Spotlight on Implementation: District and Community Partnerships with Air Reading

Last updated: November 30, 2025

Air Reading’s evidence-based virtual tutoring model is transforming how schools deliver literacy intervention. Across the country, schools and community organizations are integrating Air Reading into their instructional systems to provide students with consistent, high-quality reading support. Below are two examples of how Air Reading is being implemented on the ground to close reading gaps and build strong literacy foundations.

West Feliciana Parish Schools (Louisiana)

Accelerate: High-Dosage Tutoring initiative

According to the Louisiana Department of Education’s Models of Excellence report (December 2024), Air Reading was selected as the literacy tutoring partner for West Feliciana Parish Schools under the state’s Accelerate: High-Dosage Tutoring (HDT) initiative.

Key details

  • Implemented under Act 771 (2024): This Louisiana law mandates in-school HDT for students in grades K–5 performing below proficiency.
  • Targeted grades: Air Reading served grades 4–5, delivering online literacy tutoring grounded in the Science of Reading.
  • Integrated schedule: Tutoring was built into the school day, complementing in-person instruction for younger grades (K–3).
  • Data-driven collaboration: Teachers and the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) reviewed biweekly progress data to adjust skill targets and student groups.
  • Expanded reach: The district doubled student participation, with 45% of all K–5 students receiving services.
  • Measured results: Approximately 60% of students achieved proficiency on targeted literacy skills by the first progress-monitoring checkpoint.

Why it matters

West Feliciana Parish Schools demonstrates how a district can align HDT with classroom instruction and data cycles to create sustained reading growth. By embedding Air Reading directly into the school day and monitoring student progress closely, the district helped ensure both access and accountability.

Heartland & Crandall ISD (Texas)

Community-funded literacy innovation

Through the Heartland Education Foundation (HEF), Air Reading is being implemented within the Heartland and Crandall communities in Texas. HEF’s investment reflects a community-wide commitment to early literacy and equitable access to evidence-based tutoring.

Key details

  • Locally funded support: HEF provides financial backing to deliver Air Reading’s virtual tutoring sessions across multiple schools in the Heartland and Crandall ISD zones.
  • High-quality instruction: The program emphasizes “tailored learning experiences” and “expert instruction from highly trained instructors,” helping students receive live, interactive sessions—not passive online programs.
  • Commitment to growth: HEF describes its mission as “investing in the future of local students … strengthening reading skills but also building confidence and a lifelong love of learning.”
  • Wide community reach: Air Reading is part of HEF’s larger portfolio of educational initiatives, supporting students from elementary through high school within Crandall ISD.
  • Equitable access: The virtual model enables schools to provide consistent, high-quality instruction regardless of geography, staffing, or scheduling constraints.

Implementation implications

  • Community-backed sustainability: Because HEF is a local foundation, Air Reading’s implementation benefits from community-level oversight and funding stability, reducing reliance on district budgets.
  • Scalable and flexible: The virtual format allows Air Reading to serve students across multiple campuses, regardless of geography or staffing limitations.
  • Evidence-based confidence: HEF’s decision to fund Air Reading reflects strong institutional trust in its proven, research-backed design and measurable student outcomes.

Why it matters

The partnership between HEF and Air Reading exemplifies how community-based funding can expand access to evidence-based literacy instruction. By leveraging local investment, the Heartland initiative makes it possible for students to benefit from the same rigorous, research-backed tutoring model proven effective in national studies. This community-driven approach also strengthens local ownership and sustainability, helping districts scale high-dosage tutoring without overextending district budgets.

In summary

Both West Feliciana Parish Schools and the Heartland Education Foundation exemplify how Air Reading’s structured, research-validated tutoring model can be adapted to different contexts—whether driven by state-level mandates or community-funded initiatives. Each implementation demonstrates that when schools commit to fidelity, data monitoring, and sustained engagement, students make measurable gains in reading achievement.
